Organization Background
CompassPoint is a national nonprofit leadership and strategy practice based in Oakland, CA. For over 40 years, they have strengthened nonprofit leadership and supported organizations to adapt and operate strategically. Through intensive cohort leadership development programs, they equip people with the skills, knowledge, and support to powerfully engage in the process of leadership.
Next Generation Leaders of Color is a leadership development program in its 7 th year of implementation. Previous cohorts were focused in Northern California and Los Angeles County.
The NGLC program has been designed to achieve impact through: Strengthened community: Building a sense of belonging in community through strengthened interpersonal skills and practices that support trust-building and deep collaboration; Increased knowledge & skill: Build greater awareness of personal, organizational, and regional strengths; develop an understanding of leadership and management frameworks; and Increased resilience & resistance: Activate practices of self-care and renewal as crucial elements of sustainable leadership; deepen consciousness around the impacts of racism, sexism and other forms of oppression and develop practices to heal from trauma; 100% of past graduates report a significant increase in their level of confidence in every leadership domain: leading self, leading others, leading in their organizations, and leading in their communities. 91% of participants report that they have successfully applied the programs’ content and learnings into their organizations to improve management systems and interpersonal communications.

2018 | $25,000 | CompassPoint received a $25,000 grant for Tier 2 of the Next Generation Leaders of Color – Inland Region which will work with a subset of the leaders from Tier 1 and the organizations for which they work. Focus will be placed on organizational and leadership sustainability by engaging organizational teams (2-3 leaders from each organization) in workshops, peer learning and organizational change. Consistent participation of several staff or board members together yields deeper learning and application to their organizations’ development. The grant will go towards coaching expenses, the component deemed most valuable to participants in Tier 1 of the NGLC – Inland Region. |
2017 | $20,000 | The NGLC IE cohort marks the first in the Inland Region. Its aim is to build on the past successes of the NGLC while also creating a program that will address some of the opportunities and challenges identified by local stakeholders in the IE. CompassPoint staff co-design programs that are rigorous, relevant, and engaging of constituent perspectives with their clients and funders. Program components include completion of a 360 Degree Strengths Assessment, Quarterly In-Person Retreats, Facilitated Peer Learning Groups, Executive Leadership Coaching, and Evaluation. Of the 20 candidates selected to participate in the NGLC IE program, 8 of their organizations (40% of cohort) work on issues of health access and health equity. The budget for the NGLC IE cohort leadership development program is $591,000, of which $520,000 has been raised. A $20,000 grant goes towards supporting retreat costs and coaching for leaders focused on health access and equity. |
